Staffordshire auction house to host sale of exceptional local wine cellar

Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones is set to host an auction with a difference on the evening of Friday, 3rd December with the contents of a carefully collated wine cellar set to come under the hammer. The specialist sale, which will contain over 200 lots, has been arranged in conjunction with Andrew Wilson of Tittensor’s Old School Wines, who has consigned the large cellar and the contents of two smaller cellars to auction on behalf of private clients.

Consisting of around 300 bottles that include fine and rare vintages of Claret, Sauternes, Burgundy, Vintage Port and Vintage Cognac alongside rare Joule’s Commemorative Ales the large cellar is of particular interest due to both its quality and its local links, as Andrew explains:

“It has been a joy to sort through this cellar and we’ve found some real gems from the 50s, 60s and 70s. The cellar was collated by a local gentleman who worked as a warehouse manager at Joule’s brewery in Stone, so there’s an added dimension of local interest.

“Perhaps the oldest and one of the most interesting bottles is a Joule’s Victory Ale, which was brewed in 1946, while the most recent bottles are from the mid-seventies vintages. There are also a large number of half bottles of Claret from the 60s and 70s, mostly bottled by W.H & J Joule’s of Stone, which makes the timing of the sale particularly poignant following the recent re-launch of the Joules Brewery in Market Drayton.

“We’re delighted to be working with Cuttlestones on what promises to be a very exciting sale – until now, the nearest auction house to host specialist wine sales was in the south Midlands. It’s great to be working with a local auction house and, with live online bidding options available alongside commission and telephone bids, we anticipate strong international interest in some of the rarer lots.”

The specialist wine sale will take place from 7.30pm on Friday, 3rd December and the catalogue will be available to view online at www.cuttlestones.co.uk from Friday, 26th November. For those unable to attend the sale telephone and commission bids will be accepted alongside live online bidding via www.the-saleroom.com. For further details on how to register to bid visit www.cuttlestones.co.uk; to discuss any of the wines in the sale in more detail call Andrew Wilson on 01782 377 888.
